On higher mileage vehicles, an engine misfire may develop and/or the Check Engine Light may illuminate due to a failed ignition coil. It is not uncommon to replace all the coils when the first one fails in order to prevent return trips to the repair shop.

coil failed, caused a misfire. The spark plug blew out and knocked off the oil cap. made a lot of noise and a big mess. $1700 to fix at Sterling McCall Toyota in Katy
My car was shaking and felt like it was going to shut off. The mechanic replaced both coils for a little over $300. Seems to be working fine.
