I have had nothing but problems with this car. Starting 2 days ago ESC OFF light illuminates every so often and then shut off once engine is restarted. Today the check engine light came on and seconds later the ESC OFF light came back on. Is this a coincidence or not? Has anyone had this issue? If so, please let me know what it is. Thanks

no matter what it is, you have your manufactures warranty for the car. let the dealer worry about it.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF MY CAR IS GOING TO STOP DRIVING, LIKE I READ HAPPENED TO SOMEONE ELSE WITH THIS PROB. I DO HAVE 2 KIDS TO THINK ABOUT.
Answer #2Visitor, July 31, 2010, 10:11
Mine is doing the same thing....as of this morning.
I took it to Auto Zone and they did a simple diagnostic test and it read that my brake switch is not working (it turns the brake lights on and off). the part cost $16....but they didn't have it in stock. He said my husband could change it (but my husband can't even change light bulbs...lol) but he said to avoid going to the dealership because they will charge ALOT.
SO be careful....you have NO brake lights until you get it fixed.

The brake light switch on your KIA Sorento is a "RECALL" item. If you already got it fixed on your own expense, you can go to your local KIA dealership to be reimbursed. You should have received a Recall Notice in the mail. Contact KIA about the Recall Notice if you didn't.

Yes, I am having this problem too with my 2008 KIA Sorento. The KIA service department told me they have never had this much problems with any of their vehicles. This is the 4th time it has been at the KIA service department for the ESC OFF light on and Check Engine light. We have been 300 miles from home and it came on. It will not accelerate over 25 mph at first then it will slowly start accelerating but it takes maximum effort to get to at least 50 mph.

I just had this problem. It's the Pedal accelerator assembly. It has to be replaced as a assembly.

My 2008 Kia Rondo also has had the check engine light coming on for about 5 months now...we take it in, sometimes they find something to fix and sometimes they don't....and I use the work "fix" loosely! We lose full power and it's very annoying taking it in the dealers. Now I see it's happening to others. What can be done? I really do not want the car anymore and have tried to sell it for a lose on what I still owe. No takers!!!
Answer #5Visitor, October 28, 2010, 12:17
At least I don't feel alone with this problem. My Kia Sorento started to have this problem a month ago. Somethimes in the morning I need to start the engine 3-4 times and in the evening the same rutine. I took the car to the dealear .. No brain ... Can't find the cause. But they told me to take it to one of those auto part places. That could be some problems with the sensor. This problem almost cause my life. Happen 3 times when I was in the express at 70 miles and drop the speed in seconds. 2 trucks almost clean me from the road. Its very dangerous and I heared from other Kia owners that its frequent on the 2008 models. Why the company can not fix it!!! Like Toyota and the other companies did with their mess.!!!! Be carefull its no an easy thing...Can cause you your life...

Have you had your problem resolved? On my sorento the ESC OFF light came on in July of 2010, would loose power. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the sensor and the car ran fine...until this past Monday. I went out to warm the car up, after about 10 minutes I returned to the car to leave and noticed that the ESC OFF light was on as well as the check engine light. I am so thankful that this did not happen the day before as I drove 500 MILES home from Mississippi and it could have been a disaster to say the least. This morning, it did the same thing. I turned off the car and restarted, the ESC OFF light went out, but the check engine light is still on. So I will be calling the dealership today to set up an appointment for which I will have to drive 45 miles to get to....that should be interesting!

My 2007 Kia has done this a couple times now and was at just over 1/4 tank of gas when it happens. I turn the car off, wait a couple of minutes then restart and the ESC light will go off and will drive normal. After refuelling it usually doesn't happen again for a while. I wonder if it may be related to a fuel sensor?
Answer #7Visitor, May 13, 2011, 05:45
The problem with the kia is they have to replace the ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR.Most dealer's don'e even know that.Tell them that the next time.Good luck! Also change the pedal assy-acce part #32700-3E400

How do you know this? My Kia just did this AGAIN! These lights, the ESC OFF and Check Engine, will come on, go off, I loose power, turn car off, turn car on, lights off, dirve a little ways, lights on, loose power, turn car off then on, lights off, car runs fine ... then all of a sudden it won't do it for a long time, days and weeks, then it will do it again. When I call the dealership service dept. they always seem surprised and have never heard of this problem before...well, HELLO, they replaced the ESC sensor on my kia and I explained the problem to them more than once!

I have had the same problem over 4 years now. Nothing scarier than trying to get on Freeway in CA and car will not excel from 25mph. I find that turning off car and checking the gas cap helps the problem of the check engine and esc lights. Car starts right up and lights are cleared. Also note problem more on hot days. I, too, had called dealership and told them and they couldn't figure it out. Same ole thing, doesn't happen when a mechanic looks at it.

About a year ago I had the same problem with the ESC light and lose of power, I had it towed to the dealership and they replaced the APS sensor and the pedal assembly. This fixed the problem until yesterday, I had my family loaded in the car and the ESC light came on again and I had no power. I called the dealship and they can not look at the car for 2 weeks they said they are busy. After telling them I can't go over 30 miles an hour and would have no car for the 2 weeks they agrred to do nothing and said they could look at it in 2 weeks. This scares me to think it has happened twice in a year and the 2008 Sorrento has less than 30K on it.

I have had the SAME problem with my 2008 Sorento!!! I bought it preowned and 3 weeks later it started. It randomly comes on. Dealer does quick fixes, but every few months, the light reveals itself. Very dangerous while driving!! After light turns on, car wont restart!!! I found out the original owner had this problem as well!! But when I bring it to KIA, or even call KIA corporate, THEY NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM!! Now my car is 1000 miles over warranty and they were trying to get me to pay. But I fought them telling them it was never resolved the last 3 times I brought it in under warranty!! Too bad they cant even figure it out bc theyve been working on it for almost 2 weeks now. I wrote to the BBB and their response was that after they get the car to restart, the light goes off, and they cant duplicate the problem. DUH! I finally got them to take this crap back!! And They better give me all my money I spent!! Monday I meet with the Vice Pres. of the dealership. Shame on Kia for seeing issues and not resolving them. And Shame on the dealership for KNOWING These problems existed and reselling it preowned to me. Very sad that I will end up giving this back, and the knew unsuspected owner will have to pay. :(

I have been battling this problem since 10/2008.... three months after I bought mine. It is in the shop now .... for the 7th time. I have contacted corporate and will see if the fix it this time. If not I am going to contact the news stations about this dangerous situation Kia is putting it's buyers in.

Linda - What happened with you car? We purchased our 2008 Sorento (with less than 40,000 miles on it) a month ago. We had the check engine light come on and the ESC off light. We took it to get fixed and it worked for a couple of weeks. Yesterday the same thing happened on the highway AND I lost acceleration, too. VERY SCARY! Reading on the internet people recommend replacing the ESC/TCS module and/or the"throttle body assembly" and to make sure it is written on the work order the EXACT reason the vehicle was brought in and to check for a short in the fuse box. I was AMAZED that the same problems have been going on since 2006 with the Sedona. I don't know if this will fix our problem but A kia repair person also posted that there was a TSB #KT2009042201 that addressed the problem for(Vehicles produced prior to 4/1/2009)
2006~2009 Sedona (VQ) with 3.8L engine equipped with PCM
2007~2009 Sorento (BL) with 3.3L and 3.8L engines equipped with ECM & TCM
2007~2009 Amanti (GH) with 3.8L engine equipped with PCM
2006.5 Optima (MG) with 2.7L engine equipped with PCM
2007 Rondo (UN) with 2.7L engine equipped with PCM
If they scan it and pull a code P2135, then TPS replacement and PCM upgrading should be done.
