Chevrolet Monte Carlo Problem Report
Chevrolet Monte Carlo Speedometer or Other Instrument Panel Gauge May Work Erratically
The speedometer or other instrument panel gauge may begin to work erratically at times. Our technicians tell us that the instrument cluster must be sent to a repair facility to correct this fault.
speedometer in a stopped position stars out at 25mph or higher as high as 80mph. when driving 35mph will register as 70 or 80mph. didn't get fixed. any suggestions an what's wrong? - Visitor
Instrument panel light went out first, then the gauges started to not function properly. Speedometer is the only gauge working properly, Temp gauge would go off the chart when in fact it was running at normal temp. Had a mechanic check out the wiring cluster and he found there was a short, he moved one of the lines next to the air handler and the gauges worked normally for a short time. Very frustrating, as many of the complaints that I have seen on this condition that Chevy wouldn't do a recall on them.. - Visitor
I have a 2004 Monte Carlo SS. Around 80,000 all my gauges started to act erratically. Also my seat belt and airbag light would come on. In the message center the battery icon light would come on. All this would happen at different speeds while driving. I do not know what the problem is. I would appreciate any good leads on how to fix this problem. - Visitor
Started with oil pressure gauge pinning, then voltmeter, then gas gauge. Speedometer only quit once, works accurately now. Half the time the smaller gauges work fine, but I use info center to monitor gas amount! - Visitor

Voltmeter and Speedometer did not indicate properly. Disassembled Instrument cluster and replaced the all stepper motors. Cost for stepper motors about $20.00 and available on E-Bay. These new stepper motors do not have the defect that the old ones had. This issue has affected many other cars other than GM cars. - Visitor
