Ticking Noise When Cold Due to Broken Exhaust Manifold Studs on Nissan Pickup (D21)

Problem Description and Possible Solution

The exhaust manifold on the 3.0 liter engine often warps and cracks, breaking off the studs between the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold.   The noise may be most noticeable when the engine is cold.

loud ticking from the engine... most likely a hole in the manifold. only at idol is when you hear the loud "clapping"
Exhaust manifold leaking due to warped surface contact. Noisy exhaust. Replacement of exhaust manifold.
Exhaust manifold cracked along with the ex. man. studs breaking. Head seems to have been machined unevenly.
mine is actually an 87, but have had the same problem . .either broke off or vibrating out, set to specs with a touch of lock tight. which probably burned off rite away . .
exhust manifold cracked broken studs
I've wondered where the ticking sound came from. I only hear it when the engine is cold.
