The engine may start and stall with the security light flashing. This is commonly caused by a failed passlock sensor which is part of the ignition lock cylinder. A secondary cause could be the ignition switch itself. Worn contacts inside the ignition switch can cause voltage drop issues which can affect the passlock system. Proper diagnoses should be performed before replacing any parts.Google+

NOT STARTING and SECURITY LIGHT is problem--no problem with engine stalling
every month or so--SECURITY LIGHT comes on and stayed on for few minutes
6 months ago, 3 months ago
when key turned to start car--no sound--not start
all electrical devices work
wait---then start after 3 to 15 minutes--engine has NEVER stalled
then last week, not start, rotate through messages
3 minutes, 15 minutes later--still not start
half hour later, car started, but CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on and stayed continuously each time engine was started
Mechanic charged retail to replace ignition lock cylinder $ 225.90, almost that much to remove and replace, plus diagnostic fee, and recoding and reprogramming fee

trip from nyc to montreal in July 2014. security light came on. parked in the garage for two days. ready to leave and the car will not start. call the gm canadian number and explained about the security light which may be the problem and asked if anyone can help. After about 30 mts speaking with two or three reps repeating the same info ,a woman came and said because i had no gm road asst, she would send a truck to jump start, but she could not find Sherbrooke st, only Sherbrooke Rue[smart canadians]. Waited for 30 mts and fortunately tried the spare key, engine started and was glad to see montreal in the rear view. Have a recall letter and the light is still on , so hopefully on Dec11, the problem will be solved
