Coolant and Oil Leaks on Volkswagen GTI

Problem Description and Possible Solution

The water pump and/or other cooling system may develop a coolant leak. Oil leaking from the  valve cover gasket is also common.

One spot of oil on garage floor every day. Slight burning smell from engine compartment. No loss noticed when checking with dip stick.
Coolant leak, Dealer diagnosed water pump failure.
Low coolant light came on, and found that almost all coolant had leaked out of reservoir. Diagnosed as a faulty water pump, and was replaced under warranty by VW dealer.
Old was plastic housing, new is metal
