Poor Shift Quailty of Automatic Transmission on Hyundai Elantra

Problem Description and Possible Solution

Prior to replacing the automatic transmission fluid (to improve shift quality), make sure that the transmission fluid level is correct. Also, make sure the computer that controls the transmission has the most up-to-date adaptive programming information. When servicing these transmissions be sure to use fluid approved by Hyundai.

Auto Transmission shifts erratic at times, even when backing out in Reverse. Put in new fluid at 72000, helped some, but the hard, erratic shifts are still there.
1999 Hyundai Elantra shifts hard. When warm or hot, down shifts are very hard and makes a clunk sound. Had xmsn serviced and the problem still exists.
Just purchased this car used from a dealer. Within two weeks of purchase I was experiencing a hard kick when accelerating up through 30-40 MPH as well as an engine rev until the gears kicked down. You could feel it especially when the engine is cold, but it was then happening at random times on the road. Hyundai service indicated that the transmission needed to be replaced. I have started to see an online trend of reported complaints about the transmissions with this particular vehicle. Wish I knew before I bought...definitely frustrating.
