Chevrolet Impala Check Engine Light Due to Gas Cap Issue

(61 reports)

Illumination of the Check Engine Light can be caused by a loose or worn gas cap.

I kept getting the check engine light and tighten gas cap. Paid dealership (almost $200 including labor) for a new gas cap. Now almost a year later getting same check engine light and tighten gas cap. This time they're saying I need to replace evap vent solenoid for $130. It seems like a lot of the issues with this car are the same. GM should step up and solve them. -

Tighten Gas Cap message came up last week...hadn't filled up in about 4 days. Cap was tight but I took it off and put it back on and the message cleared. 3 days ago the check engine light came on. I went to Advance Auto and they ran a free scan, everything was fine except the fuel evap fault. They told me to tighten the cap and if it doesn't clear in a few days, replace the cap. I have a cap on order from Amazon for $14.49, hopefully it will resolve. I can't complain, this is the first problem we have had since buying the car new in June of '09. It's been a great car with lots of power and speed, very sure footed in the snow. It's paid off so I hope to have the car for another year before getting rid of it. -
I've had it resets ever all times & 2 new gas caps since. Problem keeps recirring. The ogget problem is you won't know I'd you Jane a real issue if the check enginE light is always on. -
My check engine light came on a few days after I had an oil change.I took it back to the shop to have it checked and the service man stated that my gas cap was loose/or needed replacing. I bought a new gas cap from local advanced auto store, he turned the engine light off, but stated that it would probably come on again. I had it rechecked at another auto service center, with similar results-gas cap needs to be tightened. I've been driving it about 3 months with the light on. -
