The Check Engine Light may illuminate due to an evaporative emission (EVAP) system fault. Our technicians tell us these EVAP system faults can be difficult to diagnose but it is not uncommon to find a failed charcoal canister or a loose or worn gas cap.

    Bought a used '06 Corolla LE on March 11,2011 from Crown Chrysler Dealership in Greensboro, NC with 72K.

    Have had my charcoal canister(Toyota part) replaced (5/9/11) as indicated by the check engine light coming on. Check engine light appeared again the next day for same repair(P02402). Mechanic reset the code and light came on again so we ignored light.

    A/c stopped working(5/12/11) so back in to evacuate and recharge freon (added dye). Daughter drove car to Asheville until June 22 and A/C stopped working again.

    Took back to mechanic (6/29/11)and he found that the computer was not grounding the magnetic clutch relay. Faulty computer blamed and mechanic discovered it was covered under the 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla recall for the ECM (engine control module). Check engine light back on.

    Took car to Toyota dealership to have recall done first of July, 2011 and first thing they do is run their diagnostic test and tell us we need to replace our charcoal canister. We say no thanks, just want the recall. No part in stock; will call us when it arrives. (We're still waiting to hear from them...)

    We receive our first(and only) mailed recall notice the end of July stating the potential danger of driving the car until it's fixed so we get an appointment for 8/3/2011 at the other dealership to take care of the recall. The check engine light is still on.

    First thing they do is run their diagnostic test and tell us we need to replace our charcoal canister. We mention the A/C is not working and they suggest recharge of freon. We say no thanks to both, just want the recall. If there's still a problem with either canister or A/C we'll go back where work has already been done on these 2 areas.

    Dealership in not happy with this answer but does recall for us. Their mechanic says let's see if engine light still on after replacing ECM.

    I talk with mechanic briefly after he's dropped my paperwork off at the service desk. He says A/C working fine now and no engine light on!!!!!! Yea!

    Service desk refused to see any connection between faulty ECM and my A/C or the engine light code indicating i needed a new Canister. They said my check engine light would probably come back on indicating I still needed
    that canister repair. I am happy to say that has not been the case.

    It took me a while to realize that back in May, when we got the first P02402 code indicated, if we had been able to have the recall done first, the check engine light would have disappeared since it was being caused by the faulty computer(ECM). The A/C problem was also being caused by the faulty ECM.

    So we have spent $636 to replace a canister that was not broken, $101 on A/C and $245 to verify nothing wrong with the A/C, discovering the recall in the process.

    I am in process of dealing with Toyota. I am concerned that cars coming in for this recall are having needless repairs done AT THE SAME TIME as their recall is happening and are none the wiser. In my case doing the recall first made all the other problems disappear but not before I had paid someone else $1000 to fix them.

    So beware to get your recall done first. Then see if any problems remain! Do not follow the dealership's plan to do them simultaneously or you may never know if they were really needed.

    check engine light went on. codes indicated something in evap system. strong smell of gas after stopping car. may be leaking gas. update: went to honest repair shop and found out mouse had chewed gas filler hose. bought part at junkyard for $15, parked over a ditch so I could wiggle underneath, and replaced part (just 2 clamps)never thought I'd be doing this as a 60-year-old woman, but i couldn't face all the expensive repairs as mentioned on this site. i can see the small teeth marks on the hose. disconnected battery to shut off check engine light, hasn't come back on since! so make sure to have them put up on a lift and check that hose for teeth marks!

    Check engine light on again; was on at 39349. First time code was PO456 and dealership recalibrated ECM (and then proceeded to charge me almost $300 to "adjust rear brakes" which I learned is totally unneccessary since they SELF ADJUST! and a complete fuel system service). Now the light is on again. Took it to Autozone and they hooked up car for free and said it was something in the EVAP system. Took it to dealer today and was told that there were multiple fault codes: P2401, P2402, P2419, P043E, and P043F. Said EVAP pump faults. Inspected pump and found water inside vent tube and said need to replace cannister assembly due to water intrusion. They were specific it was water and NOT gas in the line. Asked if I had been in deep water and told no. Car has never been in a flood, no exposure to water outside of normal driving in rain. Also told would need to complete level 2 testing after new cannister is installed. They want $571 to do the work. After looking on line, it seems this EVAP system has been a problem in cars in the late 90's and there was a suit against Toyota requiring them to assist with cost of this problem. Seems like it is still a problem. I was told it will not affect how the car runs, and since I live in a state without annual car inspections, it isn't an issue at this time. We are looking into the feasibility of purchasing and installing the part ourselves.

    Ended up replacing gas cap and charcoal canister myself with parts bought online. had to take it to a garage to get the canister off from rust and use the hydrolic wrench but not a super hard project and took about 2 hours. no check engine light and runs fine now.

    Bought this used 2002 Toyota Corolla Ce about 2 weeks ago. The car drives like a dream. The other day about 2 miles down the road the MIL went on a stayed on. I did purchase a repair manual after I got this car and have just purchased a memo scan OBDII handheld-both off of Ebay. Anyway the scan brought up codes P0441-p0446 both having to do with the EVap Canister. We are now in the process of checking all hoses, valves etc in the front of the car first, so far all are normal functioning per vacuum and gauge tests.The light was still on. The only thing we did was a few days prior to this happening,I put gas in the car-after seeing problems with the fuel cap-that was inspected also-no problems. I have been reading several forums that this seems to be a problem in alot of vehicles. As of today, after recording all the codes on paper, we erased the codes from the scanner, reran the test and the light was off. we will see what happens after driving the car again in a day or so-If the light comes back on, then we will disconnect the canister and check the back valves.Hope this helps so far-and hope this problem is taken care of. This manual and scan tool are real life savers so far!

    Burns oil. Constantly have to put more oil. Probably once ever 500 miles. I use 10W30 which allowed me to drive it this long without having to put more oil. With 5w30 I would have to add oil every 250 miles...
