I bought this 2002 325i and would like to know what the M/S +/- near the drive on the gear shifter stand for

My 2002 BMW 325xi has over 100,000 miles and is consuming oil at the rate of one quart a week. There is no leak visible. My mechanic says the engine is burning it. What is happening?

In first and second gear it's really bad, but when I go faster it stops grinding. The grinding is so rough you can feel it from the inside of the car.

coolant recovery tank replaced 1 year ago, cracked by mechanic during air filter replacement...for awhile coolant leaking I have to add some almost everyday. Shop wants to replace waterpump(its seeping) 2 belts, they are crackly looking and thermostat. They want 700 for this not including the hoses.....

iv looked to see if anyone else has but i can't find any online only of the 325i

I also replaced the fuel pump relay switch as well. Please help me I just bought this car.

into the fuel system and causing blue smoke to come out of the emission pipe. We were told it would take $2200 to repair it. They also said since it is a BMW they recommend the engine be replaced since it is so difficult to take apart and piece back together and that would be around $5000 or more! This car is the most comfortable, easy, smooth control in any road condition as it is all wheel drive I have ever had. I don't want to sell it but don't know if replacing engine is worth doing.

Outer cv boot covers are ripped. I was told that it was just as easy to replace the entire axel assembly as it is to replace the outer cv boots. Is this really necessary and is it cost effective? It seems to drive well.
Thanks again, Bill P.

I have already replaced the valve cover gasket. That seemed to help. However, the engine will sometimes run a little rough when I start it and the oil light comes on. If I shut the engine off after a minute and restart it. It will pure like a kitten and the oil light goes off. Could this have anything to do with the VANOS control unit? How do we find the leak? Thanks, Bill Poirier

All other tests pass. I have put over 500 miles on the car and still same results. The engine check light is not on.

I noticed it happens on hold ups/traffic jam. It goes off and wont start up, like its cutting fuel. When i leave it for sometime (5 min), it will start and run like normal. I have changed the fuel pump and filter. The temp guage is normal (mid point). I have this diagnostic kit and the codes on it are P1085, P0174, P1083, P1525, P0115, P0161, P0128, P0172. Please help.

i want to know how long it should take to replace the fuel pump shop time
