My 4WD/2WD push button selector switch won't light up most of the time and when it does it won't come out of 4LO. Service 4WD light is on. My mechanic ran diagnostic and couldn't find anything wrong. Obviously there is something wrong as it still says service 4WD.
4 wheel drive service light will come on after switching to 4 high. Selector swith will fail and is stuck in 4 high. I have to turn the engine off then back on to select 2 high. Dealer cannot find a

Z71 Tahoe transfer case makes noise when going down the road. Vehicle jumped while at stoplight, like someone bumped into me. Lifted rear axle, put into 2wd ,while tires start to turn loud noise coming from transfer case and klunking sounds. I do not use 4wd !!! This is the only problem I`ve ever had with my Chevy and if continues I will never buy any 4wd vehicle again! I really love this Z71 Tahoe.(I traded my `03 Excursion 4wd diesel for this?) Dashboard says service 4wd.Just driving in 2wd all tne time and having problems with 4wd doesn`t make sense.

The connections within the 4x4 selector switch on the dash go bad and cause the Servvice 4x4 light to come and occasionaly cause unwanted switches from 2wd to 4wd and vice versa....pick up a new switch...$50 and 10mins of install time and the problem is fixed

Since 2008 I have replaced 4WD sensor three times and the actuator twice. If either one is bad it will cause your transfer case to try and shift into neutral while you are driving and once it is in neutral you have to pull off the road and turn the motor off and then select four wheel to get it into park and then back into two wheel drive. I have had it happen at 70 miles an hour with the cruise control on causing the engine to rev to maximum revolutions while trying to get off the freeway.
I had a similar problem with 4 wheel drive selector switch. When I select 4 wheel hi the transfer case moved into 4 wheel hi, but I later switched back to 2 wheel hi, the switch wouldn't always take place, or it would switch but the lights on the selector switch would turn off. It seems that this is a common problem due to a bad ground wire underneath the drivers seat on the main frame of the vehicle. There are two ground wires next to the emergency brake cable that need to be cleaned. As soon as I cleaned them my 4 wheel drive worked great again. Try cleaning these first, it's an easy no cost fix.

Service 4wd warning message displays all of the time. 4WD has not been used. Sometime after warning began, tried to set into 4wd mode and does not seem to actuate the front drive axel. Dealership found no problem and claimed to have reset the "system". Warning continues. NOTE: instrument cluster has been replaced under manufacturers recall before this has happened. No solution has yet been found.

I purchased a new 4wd switch from autozone and it fixed everything. I would try this before doing any expensive transfer case work! hope this helps someone!
