What is your question?
I am the owner on 1999 Camry LE 2.2 Engine (5s-fe). I like to understand my car's behavior better, that will help me to keep my car on road for long time. I learned that Toyota made this engine as non-interference. I find various thread/discussion on internet on this subject. I find the following definition for free-running engine. "Engines, chain or belt-driven, can be classified as either free-running or interference, depending on what would happen if the piston-to-valve timing were disrupted. A free-running engine is designed with enough clearance between pistons and valves to allow the crankshaft to rotate (pistons still moving) while the camshaft stays in one position (Several valves fully open). If this condition happen normally, no internal engine damage will result " I hope, many of your Toyota Camry owners did bring timing disrupted (with timing belt slipping of spindle or timing belt breaks events) cars for your care. How did the above non-interference engine definition hold timing disrupted condition on Toyota (5S-FE)? What was your recommended fix on this situation for Toyota (5S-FE)? Thanks for sharing.

Suggest timing componet 'kit' including water pump and engine oil seals. All of those items will be exposed when timing belt is being replaced and it's no better time to save some money in labor cost as opposed to doing it again! Fix it right the first time in other words. .. Free running engine and tough as they come!! I've see 500k miles on em and still running strong.
Good to know 5S-FE on road with 400K miles. @ziptie12 "1 failure that left the belt stripped(water pump blew apart-I had ignored it)NO engine damage as stated. " Did you get into replacing timing belt immediately or perform some diagnosis to make sure no piston/valve damage? Do you change oil for every 3-4K and Change the oil and filter every 10-15K? Owners manual is not recommending this. Where did you pick up this? I posted this question, because I am getting different suggestion from mechanics. Here you go. Mechanic A I have done number of timing belts on Camrys. As the timing disrupts (with timing belt slipping of spindle or timing belt breaks events) , it end up with valve damage on 5S-FE. I will show you by performing leak down test, where you will see air leak in one or more cylinder. It confirms valve damage. As the engine has 90K miles, if there is a valve damage, we need to go for re-built engine. We never know, what are the other damages inside the engine. Mechanic B I have done number of timing belts on Camrys. As the timing disrupts (with timing belt slipping of spindle or timing belt breaks events) , it end up with valve damage on 5S-FE (50/50 chance). I will replace timing belt and start the engine. If it runs OK, you are good to go. If it make noise etc, there will be valve damage, I will do valve job. Who is pointing to right solution? What will a well trained mechanic propose? Thanks for sharing.
Those guys are blowing smoke! Nearly impossible to do valve damage by simply a broken t-belt. If you don't know what to watch (inexperienced with engines) then , it would be easy to show you air leaking past(open) valves and tell you that it has valve damage! Are they doing this 'leak-down test' PRIOR to the t-belt replacement? IF they are , they are definitely QUACKS! Cannot do a leak-down test with incorrect valve timing(broken/stripped belt)! To answer your main (last) question , a WELL TRAINED 'mechanic' would KNOW that motors habits , and simply recommend what Pushrod said in his first answer , a full timing belt package .Read his reply again. Good luck.IF you feel you cannot trust either of those shops , wait and ask around for references. How many hours is Glen Burnie Md. From Bunker Hill W.V.? Or Dulles Airport? Whichever is closer....
don't ziptie have one of these with almost 400,000 on it,and still a going?forgot what year his is.
That's right!
Funny you guys bring that up!!!! I just hit 368,000 last sunday and had a chance to find out if it was speed governed (like the Dodge Intrepid I had) so I tried it out and -what do you know it WILL peg the speedometer at 140MPH!! Only running at 5300 RPM. Should I send you the video Pushrod? And for the person who posted the original question , I also believe 'Marvel Mystery Oil' has a lot to do with mines longevity! ----5 timing belts , 3 water pumps , cam and crank seals 2 times and oil pump o-ring 1 time at about 295,000miles. 1 failure that left the belt stripped(water pump blew apart-I had ignored it)NO engine damage as stated. Coil failure ,FINALLY, last January ANOTHER reason for its' long life (in my opinion) is the fact that all but maybe 3 oil filters in that total time have been TOYOTA OEM filters , and 90% of all parts have been Toyota OEM. ----The other BIG plus I have , is that I do ALL the maintenance myself. LOL!!! Alternate topping off oil with 10-30 , or Marvel Mystery Oil , every 3-4K and Change the oil and filter MAYBE every 10-15K, But up to 195,000 it had pretty good maint. every 3K
