Torque converter does not know the difference between ANY gear that is selected! So NO, the torque converter is not your reverse problem! However replacing the transmisdion should take care of it...

get a free diag and est from aamco then post findings b4 oking repair

Possible electrical issue , wire/harness damage on install. Shift linkage/cable not adjusted correctly (all wild guesses). What was problem with original trans?
