Recently had the cylinder head replaced on my 2000 Plymouth Neon. Asked him to take a look at the timing belt while he was in there to save on labor costs and I was at 100,000 miles. When I picked up the car he told me that they did replace the timing belt. Two weeks later I was driving my car in a town 1.5 hrs away and my car died on me in the middle of the street and would not restart. AAA towed my car to a nearby shop. I called the first shop in the morning and told them my car had died and was at another shop and told them I was going to have the new shop identify the issue. The new shop called me back to tell me that my timing belt was wedged under the camshaft pulley. The original shop has had the car towed up to them and they are being very careful not to accept blame saying "We'll have to get in there and determine what caused the problem." Phrases like this make me worried that they are going to be anxious to try to find a way to not assume responsibility for the timing belt issue. I'm just trying to get a feel as to whether anyone believes it's possible that the shop could find away to not assume the responsibility and claim that the work they did was not a contributing factor to the timing belt issue.

It does not mean that they will not assume responsibilty to say they need to determine the cause of the failure.I would probaly say something simular like " I want to see it my own eyes before I make a judegment." True we are human and we all can make mistakes. Its how we handle those situations is when we are judeged to be honest or not. My guess is if it all has happened as you say..... they most likely will find it failed due to something they missed was worn or simply a technician did something wrong in the procedure in working on your car.
It sounds like the problem is with the belt components, not the belt itself. Did you authorize the replacement of the belt ONLY or the Timing belt, hydraulic/mechanical tensioner, tensioner pulley, and guide pulley? If the other components failed, it is not the first shops fault. It is hard to assume responsibility for a FAILED part you didn't authorize to replace! I always sell these components and more with every timing belt replacement, little wonder I never get this kind of headache coming back on a tow truck! Unlike other "mechanics" in RepairPal and in the real world who just try to save their customers money by changing the belt only.
I had actually just asked him to look at the timing belt because of the mileage. When I picked up the car he told me that he had replaced the timing belt with the waterpump because the waterpump was showing signs of leakage. To be honest, I never approved the timing belt replacement, only asked for him to check it out.
they checked it, but didn't try to get you to authorize its replacement? or water pump replacement? shame on them, this becomes messy now that you are stuck with a big bill and they did not do their job by not protecting your interests AND replacing parts you did not authorize! I would say get your papers in order and SUE them!

can't we just all get alone. not very prof for people to see this happening. lets all lay down our swords and help when we can. we will never all agree with each other but im sure we all some imput
Unfortuntly a few of us are trying our best to inform and help some the folks that post questions and others I have no idea what there agenda is. Its sad that there are people that have bad perceptions of professonal technicians because of a few that make us look either like crooks or bumbling idiots. Attacking each other does not help. I have pondered wheather I should continue posting anything here due some the critical comments and....know it all attitudes some so called technicians post. Not to mention the lack of thanks we get from most that post questions. I hope you all have a good day. CUL
