It should be a 10min wait and sometimes X3. The passlock is your problem. Now on these it usually is the ignition lock cylinder, but this one could also be the instrument cluster.
GM has had several systems through the years, and your car should be PassKey, which is identified by the chip that is right in the key. The common failure of the system is the two wires that support the connections to the key break right at the cylinder. The "three minute wait" is a function of the module shutting the system down in anti-tamper mode when it gets an incorrect key value. Once it times out (its actually two minutes iirc) it tries to look at the key value again and if now correct allows the car to be started. The system will usually give you some starts like this when one of the wires first breaks inside its insulation and is still able to make a connection after it sits for a short time. Eventually the insulation fails too and then you cant start the car at all until the system is repaired.
The relearn is the ten minute rule.
PassKey does not relearn values. That was the system that the dealer had to take and match the old key resistance. Passlock, PasslockII and PassKey III do variations of ten minute relearns (x3)
Yes the there is 2 thin wires to the lock cylinder that break as well as the contacts in the ignition cylinder wearing and developing a poor connection at the key. I the pass-key II system determines there is a fault instead of a theft you'll get a message the car may not restart on some with drivers info display until you disconnect the battery, then it wont restart, it will automatically go into antitheft mode and shut it down when it doesn't see the proper resistance on the circuit to the key and cylinder
So what's the best solution to fix this issue? Thanks.
Try YouTube videos search passlock. And it will give you all the information you need. Your welcome
Passlock and PassKey are different. 94 only had passkey. http://members.iatn.net/techmail/view/index.aspx?origin=7&d=1&st=1&i=44&m=2969&t=gm_electrical&v=gm&sk=871&s=electrical&search=1&tr=66&k=theft+&page=2 http://members.iatn.net/techmail/view/index.aspx?origin=7&d=1&st=1&i=26&m=638&t=gm_electrical&v=gm&sk=871&s=electrical&search=1&tr=66&k=theft+&page=2
Thank you both!
It covers both under the same heading or I would have told you different.
the 10 min. wait is that with the key on or off?
With the key on and wait for security light to go out. Sometimes have to repeat it 2 more times with a total of 3. If no start then parts need replacing.
Ok will try it in the morning time for a beer thanks
