the check fuel cap warning alert just appeared. This has not ever happened before. the honda manual said to remove and then tighten the cap, and after a few days the alrm should clear,if not would it be reasonable to say the cap needs replacing? we just had a couple of heavy snow days here where i live, which was not normal, could that effect the situation?

The system has recognized an EVAP leak in the Evap system. The gas cap could be the reason and it might be another reason. Most will check the gas cap first, if it doesn't clear it will need the EVAP system checked. That being said, it could be something completely different. The engine light will come on for a 100 different reasons, it would be better if you have the computer scanned to be sure of what it is that is causing the light to come on.
Also the snow could have dislodged some of the evap hoses or other componets! Have it tested and inspected as stated!
Along with both correct #1 & #2 answers , ...a question...during any of those cold days , did you happen to leave it running while you where putting gas in it?
No, I didn't. I did start it and let it idle to try to warm the windshield warm enough to get the ice off.
