The brake lights may stay on if an upward/rearward force contacts the brake pedal. If this happens, the lights would remain on whether or not the brake pedal is applied, and will remain illuminated even when the key is switched off. This condition could drain the battery if left, and increase the risk of a rear end crash since drivers will not know when the brakes are applied.
