Front Seat Belt Retractor Can Separate From Rear Door

Affected Cars:

RepairPal Expert Overview

Our Quick Take:

In the event of a crash, the driver and/or front passenger seat belt retractor could come loose from its mounting, increasing the risk of personal injury.

What Should You Do?

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by Toyota after a notification timeline has been developed. If you don't receive recall notification and you feel you should have, please contact your Toyota dealer. They may ask for your vehicle identification number (VIN), so please have it handy when you call.

The driver and passenger front seat belt retractors are located in the rear doors. If the rear doors are repeatedly closed with excessive force the door panel may crack. If cracks occur around to lower seat belt retractor anchor the retractor could come loose, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Toyota is currently developing a remedy for this problem.

Potential Number of Units Affected:

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007 through 2013 FJ Cruiser passenger vehicles. The retractors for the front driver and passenger seat belts are mounted in the access door (rear door) panels of the vehicle. Due to insufficient strength of the access door panel, cracks may develop in the panel if the access door is repeatedly and forcefully closed over an extended period of time.

If cracks occur in the panel around the lower retractor anchor, the seat belt retractor could become detached, which could increase the risk of injury to an occupant in the event of a crash.

Toyota is currently developing a remedy. Toyota has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
