A Crack Can Develop in the Fuel Tank
Exhaust & Emissions, February 25, 2011
RepairPal Expert Overview
Our Quick Take:
A restriction may develop in the EVAP system vent line. This could put undue strain on the fuel tank and cause a leak, which increases the risk of a fire.
What Should You Do?
We at RepairPal have designated this a high priority recall; the fuel leak may develop without warning. Please contact your Mazda dealer. They will check to see if your specific vehicle is affected and advise you on what to do next. Always have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.
A spider web can cause a restriction in the EVAP canister vent line. This can result in undue stress on the fuel tank during the vapor purge function of the EVAP system. This stress could crack the fuel tank, resulting in a leak. Any fuel leak increases the risk of a fire. Dealers will inspect and clean the vent line and install a spring to keep spiders from entering the line. This recall is expected to begin on March 25, 2011. The Mazda recall number is 6211B.

MAZDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 MAZDA6 VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 8, 2008, THROUGH FEBRUARY 8, 2010. A CERTAIN TYPE OF SPIDER MAY WEAVE A WEB IN THE EVAPORATIVE CANISTER VENT LINE AND THIS MAY CAUSE A RESTRICTION IN THE LINE. IF THIS OCCURS, THE FUEL TANK PRESSURE MAY BECOME EXCESSIVELY NEGATIVE WHEN THE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM WORKS TO PURGE THE VAPORS FROM THE CANISTER.
AS THE CANISTER IS PURGED REPEATEDLY DURING NORMAL OPERATION, THE STRESS ON THE FUEL TANK MAY EVENTUALLY RESULT IN A CRACK, POTENTIALLY LEADING TO FUEL LEAKAGE AD AN INCREASED RISK OF FIRE.
DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND CLEAN UP THE CANISTER VENT LIN, AND INSTALL A SPRING TO PREVENT THIS TYPE OF SPIDER FROM ENTERING THE VENT LINE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MAZDA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-222-5500.
