Side Air Bag and Safety Belt Tensioner May Not Deploy
Body, Interior & Misc., September 16, 2009
RepairPal Expert Overview
Our Quick Take:
A problem with the air bag wiring may cause the side air bag and/or safety belt tensioner not to deploy if needed in a crash. If these do not deploy to protect the occupant in a crash, the risk of injury is increased.
What Should You Do?
We at RepairPal have designated this a high priority recall; the side air bag and seat belt tensioner may not deploy as designed. Please contact your BMW dealer. They will check to see if your specific vehicle is affected and advise you on what to do next. Always have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.
An incorrect crimp connector may have been installed on the side air bag and belt tensioner wiring. There may be insufficient contact in the wiring, creating high resistance. This condition may cause the side air bag and/or safety belt tensioner not to deploy if needed in a crash, which increases the risk of injury. Dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The recall began September 16, 2009.

BMW IS RECALLING 2,350 MY 2008 1-SERIES AND 3- SERIES PASSENGER CARS. INCORRECT CRIMP CONNECTORS MAY HAVE BEEN USED ON THE SIDE AIR BAG AND BELT TENSIONER WIRING. IF THAT HAPPENED, IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE FOR THE SIDE AIR BAG AND/OR THE SAFETY BELT TENSIONER NOT TO DEPLOY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY PROTECT AN OCCUPANT, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES.
