Mazda is recalling 2007–2009 Mazda 3 and Mazda 5 vehicles due to a sudden loss of power steering assist that can occur at any time. A sudden loss of power steering assist adversely affects the driver's ability to steer the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. Starting in September 2010, Mazda will mail notification letters to owners with information about the recall.

Body, Interior & Misc., December 18, 2006

RepairPal Expert Overview:

The sliding door latch mechanisms may experience water intrusion, allowing the latch mechanism to freeze in cold weather. At this time, only vehicles in cold weather states are being recalled for this issue. When the door is opened, the latch pawl may remain in the open position and not latch properly when closed. Since the door may open unexpectedly while driving, an unbelted occupant could be ejected from the vehicle. Dealers will replace the sliding door latches to correct this concern. The Mazda recall number is 4306K.
