A programming change to the variable gear ratio steering (VGRS) system can cause improper activation of the steering system protection logic, which is designed to protect the steering system when larger than normal inputs are applied when the wheel is fully turned. Improper activation of the protection system can cause the steering wheel to become off centered up to 90 degrees. This can happen if the steering wheel is fully turned and then quickly turned back to center. If the steering wheel unexpectedly becomes off center while driving, the risk of a crash is increased. Dealers will replace the steering control ECU free of charge. The recall began on July 12, 2010.
