Model Years Affected: 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996

Average Mileage: 160,500 mi (150,000 mi - 171,000 mi)

The automatic transmission shifter may fail causing the ignition key to become stuck in the ignition lock cylinder.

  • Especially in warmer weather, the key will get stuck in the ignition. If I put the steering wheel all the way up and just let the car sit, usually for just a minute or two, I can turn the key all the way and pull it out.

I haven't pursued this too far. The brake light/hazard fuse is good. The hazards are stuck on and the key can't be extracted. The transaxle is stuck in park. Pretty sure these problems are all related and that the cause is a faulty shift interlock solenoid/switch, but haven't figured out how to access it. Meanwhile the car can't be moved, since it's in park. Real hassle.
