Hard Shifting, Erratic Shifting and Other Transmission Issues on Volvo S70

Problem Description and Possible Solution

Many complaints have been reported regarding Volvo S70 transmission shifting issues. Long shift times between gear shifts, hard shifting, hard downshifting and a loss of transmission operation all together to name a few.

If the issue is minor, a transmission software update may fix this issue so if available, the software should be updated before any repairs are made.

There are several technical service bulletins (TSB's) available from Volvo that address these shifting issues and they should be consulted by the repair shop during the automatic transmission diagnostic process.

Regular servicing of the transmission fluid can help with preventing transmission failure, but not in all cases. Follow the suggested fluid replacement interval recommended by Volvo. You will find this in your owners manual, or find it here:

Sometimes when I attempt to accelerate the Volvo RPM's go up but the vehicle does not move, then I goes into gear and accelerates
Arrow up light blinking for tranny. It is shifting normally but idiot stays on. Don' know code yet.
Hard to shift into gear, especially into reverse
My car experiences hard shifting, especially when the car is warmed up.

Slips when put into reverse and now drive. Also now bucks back and forth.
I don't know the drive train. Thought it was just front. 2000 S70. LOVE my car. But over the last year or two, it has been feeling slipping. Not sure why.
when cold or first start goes in gear sometimes when you stop wont move again back or forward

I have noticed that there is a rod which looks like a kick down cable for throttle pressure to the transmission- please let me know if this rod is adjustable?
only a problem in cold weather and with very strong accelleration
