It is common for the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank read the fuel level incorrectly. The sensor must be replaced to correct the condition. Our technicians recommend having the complete fuel pump module replaced on high mileage vehicles.

Fuel gauge stopped working. Repairman told me the whole fuel pump would have to be replaced. When he got into the repair, he found he could replace just the sensor instead, saving me a couple of hundred dollars.

I had the sender replace when the fuel pump went, they are a sub assembly and come as one part. I do not think that they are related, but do not know enough about the assembly. The fuel pump failure is a common problem, so it is a matter of time before you will have to have it fixed.
