1994 Ford Explorer Recalls
THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SAFETY ACT. HOWEVER, IT IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BY THE AGENCY. EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: FORD IS REPLACING ALL FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT 15, 16, AND 17 INCH TIRES MOUNTED ON FORD TRUCKS AND SUVS. FORD REPORTS TREAD SEPARATION CAN OCCUR DUE TO A COMBINATION OF THE SENSITIVITY OF THE TIRE DESIGN TO STRESS, AGING, AND MANUFACTURING DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PLANTS. FORD IS REPLACING THESE TIRES TO PREVENT POSSIBLE PREMATURE TIRE FAILURE. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: THE VEHICLES LISTED BELOW MAY HAVE BEEN ORIGINALLY EQUIPPED WITH FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES OR MAY HAVE HAD WILDERNESS AT TIRES INSTALLED DURING THE FIRESTONE RECALL LAUNCHED IN AUGUST 2000. Ford has recalled Firestone Wilderness AT and Radial ATX tires installed on multiple lines of Ford trucks from 1991 to 2000. On some tires, under extreme conditions, the tread could separate, which can cause immediate tire failure. This may lead to a loss of vehicle control, injury, and death. Dealers replaced the affected tires.
Ford has recalled certain 1993-1995 Explorer vehicles because the liftgate hydraulic lift brackets could fracture. If the lift bracket fractures, the liftgate could fall, causing injury. Dealers will install a reinforcement bracket kit to secure the lifts.
Ford has recalled certain 1992-1994 Explorer vehicles for a concern with the mirror control switch. In some cases, the mirror control switch could short circuit, resulting in smoke or a fire. Dealers will install an in-line 10 amp fuse in the positive battery feed to the switch.
Ford has recalled 1991-1994 Explorer and Ranger trucks because the bolts that mount the master cylinder to the brake booster may fracture. If these bolts fracture, brake loss could occur. Dealers will replace the power brake vacuum booster assembly.
Ford has recalled certain 1991-1995 Explorer vehicles for a concern with the liftgate gas lift brackets. In some cases, the liftgate gas lift bracket may separate from the liftgate, causing the liftgate to possibly fall. Dealers will reinforce the bracket attachments for the liftgate lifts.
THE PARKING BRAKE CONTROL SELF-ADJUST PAWL DOES NOT LINE UP PROPERLY WITH THE SELF-ADJUST RACHET CAUSING THE PAWL TO SLIP OVER ONE OR MORE TEETH IN THE RACHET.
