The left and right tie rod assemblies are part of the front steering linkage, Certain trucks are being recalled because the left tie rod can break unexpectedly. This can result in loss of steering control. Dealers will inspect the steering linkage and install a new left tie rod assembly as necessary to correct this concern. This recall supersedes a previous recall, some vehicles repaired under the first recall may require an additional repair.

RepairPal Expert Overview:

Certain vehicles may have been assembled with a left outer tie rod ball stud that may fracture; others may have received the affected tie rod assembly as a replacement part during normal service. This condition tends to occur during low speed parking lot type maneuvers when the driver is making a tight turn. This condition could result in a loss of directional stability in the left front wheel, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect the tie rod ends, replace the left outer tie rod end as required, and perform a front end toe alignment as needed. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. The Chrysler recall number is L16.

Chrysler has recalled certain 2002-2009 Dodge Rams (1500/2500/3500) because the wiper module assemblies may be susceptible to water intrusion, which may result in partial or complete loss of windshield wiper capability. This may cause reduced visibility for the driver, which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the wiper module assemblies with vented wiper motor housings.

Chrysler is recalling 18,000 aftermarket steering linkages used for service on 2003–2008 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty Pickup models. The affected assembly part numbers are 52122362AA through 52122362AD. The linkages may drag or fracture, causing a loss of steering control, which can increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the steering linkage drag link inner tie rod end assembly and inspect the steering linkage damper bracket free of charge.

The under hood silencer could sag and contact the exhaust gas recirculation cooler. This could result in an engine compartment fire. Dealers will install a bracket to support the silencer pad adjacent to the cooler. This recall is expected to begin during December 2008. The Chrysler recall number is H34.

The support straps for the optional fuel tank were not manufactured correctly and may allow the tank to come loose. If the tank loosens, fuel may leak, which could lead to a fire in the presence of an ignition source. Dealers will replace the fuel tank retention straps and fasteners free of charge. Some trucks were assembled with right side mirrors with curved (convex) mirrors. This does not conform to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard and makes it difficult for drivers of large vehicles to judge distance and could cause a crash without warning. Dealers will replace the convex mirror glass with a flat mirror glass. The recall began October 10, 2006. The Chrysler recall number is F46.

On vehicles with an automatic transmission, software in the powertrain control module (PCM) can cause the drive wheels to lock briefly when the transmission is shifted to neutral and back to drive at speeds over 40 MPH. If the drive wheels lock, loss of vehicle control could occur, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will reprogram the PCM free of charge. The recall began October 2, 2006. The Chrysler recall number if F43.
