There is a sensor, or a flap in the intake that will move as the air is sucked into the intake. When it moves it will send a ground to a relay which will energize the fuel pump.
In tank fuel pick-up strainer clogged .... Fuel filter restricted .... Fuel pump defective - low pressure.
New fuel pump. Pump does work just not turning on when the key is turned on.
It's NOT supposed to ... On this vehicle the fuel pump is energized only while engine is CRANKING/RUNNING! ... Engine has got to be revolving for pump to run. NOTE: This pump doesn't turn on by just turning the key on .. Engine must be cranking! .. For a DIY test - can remove the top to the air cleaner assembly and manually move the air vane or 'flap' inside the MAF sensor with key on (In a QUIET environment) - listen for pump to turn on.... IF everything is working correctly you will hear pump turn on while standing there.... This test should be self explanatory once you look at the MAF vane inside the air cleaner top. Simply move that part by hand or tool and listen!
