how could it get that hot and no one noticed it? did someone keep on driving after it ran that hot? no lights came on? no gauge went in to the red? think the inside of the engine got hot?
What is your coolant level in the radiator/system? If you have a leak and are very low on coolant, there may not be enough coolant to flow across your wet bulb coolant temperature sensor normally located at the top/upper area of the engine which with no coolant flowing through engine to the top heat will not be properly transferred causing damage to the engine internals with a delayed indication on your dash.
