Engine must be 'cranking' before the fuel pump will engage, simply turning key to the on position will not turn the fuel pump on .. Suggest ignition spark test next, you will need hands-on help with this test so maybe you have a car savvy friend that will help .. IF NO SPARK, suspect failed crankshaft position sensor or wiring to the sensor .. IF spark is ok, suspect failed timing belt .. Compression test will confirm belt failure .. *Timing belt* is not visible without engine front cover removal so can not be sure it is ok without testing compression OR visual inspection! .. Good luck with the repair.
PUSHROD is right on the money , as usual ! May I add , also to keep in mind , that if it does end up being the timing belt , The 5S-FE engine is non-interference , so no valve damage will occur!! Yeah, Toyota!!! By the way , Bruce , LESS then 1,000 miles to go and my '95 Camry is at 400,000!!
I open the timing belt cover the belt is ok. What happen was i was driving bavk from work almost home my car engine shut down so i coasted to street i live after that i try to start it it wont start it turn over but wont start. .i check fuel pump rely its ok the alternator and battery is ok tge fuel pump i turn without starting i dont hear the fuel pump making noise but when i start crank the car i can hear the fuel pump for few second then sound goes away that means fuel pump working?..so what could it be thank u for answering my question..i want to know so i know what is wrong minor or major plus cost of fixing please help thank u..pushrod..
Read my answer again, see the part about checking for ignition spark and needing a friend to help? .. Also just looking at the timing belt won't tell you if it's working like it should .. Have this friend crank the engine while you look at the belt, is the belt actually moving when engine is being cranked? .. Timing belts have teeth on them, if these teeth get broken off the engine gets out of time and will not start .. COMPRESSION test is needed.. That's why I suggested a 'car savvy' friend to help you .. IT takes 2 people to check this problem out .. Again, good luck!
