Engine has compression, is getting spark and will run if gas is self fed. Why won't it turn over and run on its own?

Remove the rear seat bottom cushion (lifting it up at the front then out of the way) .. On drivers side, remove fuel pump cover plate .. Test for battery voltage at the fuel pump wire connector as a helper CRANKS engine.. Simply turning the key to ON position does not work on this vehicle .. ENGINE MUST BE CRANKING (turning) BEFORE voltage is sent to the fuel pump! .. Post test results.
By your description, it sounds like fuel delivery is the confirmed issue. Things to check/test; fuel pump relay and applicable fuses(usually best to TEST all fuses), fuel pressure (IF it has been determined that the pump is running), fuel injector 'pulse'. Best if you can find (as close to factory) information on the SYSTEM and circuit testing. YouTube can be great, but you have to be careful that you are really viewing information that is SPECIFIC to your car , when necessary.
