The 'instant' engine timing fails on an interference engine, IF damage is going to occur...It already has, even at idle rpm!!.. Experienced mechanic can visually inspect for damage by removing valve cover (valve height) or (videoscope) in spark plug bore.... IF needed, can air test each cylinder to see if valves are sealing (or not) ... Yes ... even if the belt has failed!! .. IF not equipped to do those test .. just throw a belt on and see what happens!..ALL DOHC Kia engines ARE interference!.. Extensive engine damage may be beyond reasonable repair, depending on the individual vehicle... Good luck!
Which engine? Bing your make model and engine size and ask " interference engine?" I dont think the 2.0l is but unsure of the othes
did you try and keep starting it after belt broke?you didnt say, also if 4 or 6 cylinder, but it really does not matter, both are interference engines, meaning damage can or will occur.there is a timing belt and also a cam belt. should be replaced every 40000-60000 miles.(To the owner, yeap answer #3)and #4.
Best bet.....do not drive......have towed to a shop and them diagnose the issue. If you haven't tried starting or driving since, the engine may be okay. Have towed to a shop for a complete diagnosis.
