why does my engine clunk now that the timing belt broke?

The timing belt broke on my rodeo. After I replaced the belt-made sure all the teeth were lined up everything was correct. I started the vehicle and immediatly a check engine light came on and the vehicle is running very rough and making a loud clunking sound. As far as I know this is not an interference motor so the belt breaking should not have bent a valve. Any suggestions?
