What is your question?
I have an odd difficult problem. As of late, the car has been difficult to start. When I turn the key in the ignition, the car sputters (the same sound that when your car is on and you turn the key further in the ignition) and sometimes will not start, but everything lights up. Sometimes it will take 10 minutes of doing this before the car starts. Sometimes there's no wait at all. Key will turn all the way, sometimes with just the sputtering and then starting, sometimes just the sputtering and other times just starts right away. When it start, there's no delay or slow clicking noise at all. I'll be bringing this to the dealer on Wednesday for an airbag recall and will be mentioning the problem (obviously), but i was curious if anyone else has encountered this problem or is familar with this, and if so, if anyone knows what kind of ballpark I'm looking at to get this fixed. Thanks!

no need to get the dealer to fix that when you can do it your self.it's cranking over but not starting, correct?it does it when it's hot inside the car, then when it cools off some in there it will start.it's the main/fuel pump relay.it is a cold/bad solder joint inside the relay on the little green circuit board.next time when you try and start it,turn the key to on,NOT START.watch the check engine light.when it comes on and goes out,you should here it CLICK when it goes out.if no click is heard when the check engine light goes out,it ain't starting.when it cools off a little inside the car, then it will click when it goes out,and it will start.it's on the drivers side, under the dash, behind the cruise control box.google this part number to see what it looks like (20113)it's $50.00 at Autozone and takes less than 30 minutes to replace it!copy and paste the link below, and watch the video.this girl will explain on how to.hers is a 96 i think, but will be the same for a 99. I have the advantage here of having sr quiz you about how it's acting plus the fact I just had one (04 Accord) doing about the same thing... The sputtering you speak of is the 'starter cut relay' buzzing under the dash...... Try this >Turn key QUICKLY to start position to see if that helps... I eventually replaced the ignition 'electrical' switch and that fixed it... Switch contacts worn ... Turning key quickly to start position forces contacts closed so starter will engage... Otherwise if turned rather slowly or normally, the relay just buzzes and it IS pretty audible!.. It's not the starter relay at fault here... > ignition *electrical* switch!
It looks like it is in fact, the starter. I tried slowly turning it, I tried leaving it in the on position then to start. I tried turning it quickly several times in a row as mentioned and still got all the lights on and everything lit up, but only silence. No buzzing, just silence. My mechanic friend came back over, tried the same thing. He also tried jumping the battery, cleaning the corrosion off the battery, and even checking the fuses. We even took the steering column apart and removed the switch, thinking it might have been faulty so we exchanged it for another one and replaced it... still no result. at the end of it all, he was under the same impression I was that it couldn't be the starter, but he decided to try whacking at it anyways, and the car wound up starting. Turned it off, started again. Turned it off, tried it again and just dead silence. whacked teh starter, turned the key, and it started.
Sorry this is my first time posting here. My car is actually a 2003 Honda Accord. I didn't realized I posted this as a 99. Will it work for that as well?
same relay, same part number.if this is what your car is doing as i explained,it will fix it.is this what your car is doing?reply back and let us know if this is what is happening.if so i bet you can open the doors up for about 10 minutes,to let some air in the car and it will start every time.
That seems to be it. I'll further explain... For awhile, I've noticed that starting it from off to start, I'd get that same sputtering problem until I decided to turn the car on, let it sit and then start it, which there would be no problem, until today. It worked that way fine in the morning, but in the afternoon, it wouldn't even sputter, the car just turned on it by itself and nothing happened for about 15 minutes. In a panic, I called Triple AAA told them the car wouldn't start and at this point I thought it could be the starter. Triple AAA stated it would take about 90 minutes to 2 hours for a tow truck to come so i had to wait. During that time, we had a massive downpour for about 20 minutes and the humidty dropped and became cooler outside. I tried the car again, and it still gave me the same sputtering problem, until it eventually started the same way as mentioned before. I tried it again when I got home and it start 3 times in a row, only sputtering once. And I tried it all the same way; I turned it on, let it sit for alittle and then turned it on. I just went outside to try it now, and the same thing. Turned it on, let it sit for 30 seconds and it started. I'll take a look at the Youtube video tomorrow when it's daylight out. Thanks for your help
the only thing i don't understand is what do you mean by sputtering?do you mean when you turn the key to start it,then it just cranks over and does not start?explain sputtering.and in your previous post, you stated that it started all by its self?
The "sputtering" sound is similar to if you ever had your car on and already started with the engine running, and you turn the key while it's running, it gives it that same similar noise. That's the type of noise I get when i tried to crank the car. Everything would turn on, the lights, radio, air conditioning, etc. It would only do just that. If I turn the car on, let it sit, and than continue from that position to start the car, there would be no sputtering sound, it would start as normal. Unfortunatley, it's very hard to explain
read over my first answer, and try that on your car and pay close attention to the check engine light, clicking or not clicking when it goes out.also copy and paste the video and watch the video.let us know if same problem you are having.
Wonder how this one turned out?
And now alittle over a week, it's back to the same thing. It was determined it was the starter. The last time back in August (24th i believe) we tried it all. We ran a fuse test, return the new ignition switch and replaced it again, incase that one was faulty, tested the battery, etc. after all that, we decided to whack teh starter and the car started. We took it to the mechanic and they replaced it. As of the past few days, the car is doing the same thing as before, just without the buzzing. i turn it on, nothing cranks, turn it on, it starts. it happened once last week but then was fine until 2 days ago. I got stuck in 3 places with the same thing. It wouldn't start on 3 tries and then it did. When I tried to leave the house this morning, the car stopped during mid crank. So now it's back at the mechanic, to hopefully see if it's just a faulty starter but it doesn't sound like it is. i know absolutely nothing about cars, I hate to admit it. I asked my mechanic friend just for peace of mind so i don't have to worry that it's a bigger issue (transmission, alternator) and he doesn't know. it sounds like it could be an electrical problem. The only thing I noticed different is that I had the starter replaced over a year ago and when a new one was put it, it sounded differently. It sounded more like someone lightly hitting a heavy bag, a noise very soft as oppose to the usual crank noise. When I got this one put in, it made the usual crank noise. I don't know if that means anything. I guess I'm just looking for piece of mind. The mechanic we brought it back to said it has to stay there all day and then they'll try it to see if they get the same problem.
