The only sure way to repair this is to replace both fuel pump modules with high quality (preferably OE) assemblies at the same time. After the late 80's, Ford stopped using a valve to switch between tanks. Instead, when a module is energized, the dormant module keeps from receiving fuel through a valve. If the module is energized, fuel is allowed to return. However, if the module is not supplying fuel, it is not supposed to receiving any returning fuel. The problem occurs when only one module gets replaced. This overwhelms the older (and often faulty) module. Thus the new pump starts pushing fuel into the older module as well as the truck.
my friend has one of these.it had the same problem,which a lot of them did/does.Ford did recall these but i assume it won't cover yours because you would had to taken it in before a certain year and mileage,BUT i would still call them,won't hurt to try!>>>Ford has recalled 1990-1993 F150, F250, and F350 trucks due to a faulty fuel pressure regulator and malfunctioning fuel pump check valves. Block off fuel lines/hoses going to rear tank and disabled rear fuel pump thus eliminating rear tank from the fuel system altogether .. IF not sure how to do that, seek hands-on help from an auto repair savvy friend.
