What is your question?
It was rebuilt once before by my trusted mechanic, not by a transmission shop, cost $2,500 and it never really worked right, maybe at 75,000, now at 135,000. It had been getting loud and I thought it was the truck tires that had been put on. I like the vehicle, its a good fit for me and my work. I do not tow anything, but use the cargo space for homeowner/ cabinetmaker tasks. A local recomended transmission shop quoted $1,800 to $2,100 to rebuild, replacing any parts that are not right and updating to all of the Ford specified updates for my truck's transmission. I just don't knowwhat it means to get it rebuilt right and what I can expect. Last time there was something odd about the way it shifted on the column, not as distinct clicks for the positions. And it seemd not to immediately fall into gear, mostly when backing out of a space without any warm up time beofre I moved. Originally I thionk I had just lost the higher gears or perhaps it was 3rd gear. Now it does not engage power and the speedometer shows movement when the car is dead still.

Have the TRANSFER CASE checked out first!!! I assume it is 4x4,, some were not.....
With the truck safely parked , and parking brake applied look under the truck, there should be parts there. If they are all there , have it towed , to a reputable general repair shop. Good luck.
What do you mean, "there should be parts there. If they are all there, have it towed . . ." ? Am I looking for the transfer case or the parking brake or some other set of parts complete or missing? Today is Sunday, so I can't do much in the way of an appointment with my mechanic (his schedule always busy)and the transmission shop will be back from vacation this week.
Sorry , green jelly on the brain.........follow pushrods' suggestion and get it towed to a shop you trust.
Do I intuit that the transfer case is a seperate unit that is not the transmission and maybe I am suggesting something that is not the real problem? Am I looking for a transmission shop or is the transfer case a job for a genral auto mechanic?
Any good mechanic can check this out for you...when you say the speedometer is showing mph that tells me the transmission is working but the transfer case that is bolted onto the trans is not, the way it should anyway! Have it checked by a car savvy buddy or have it towed to the local repair shop, if avail...more testing is needed!
Thanks. It sounds like I could easily have been jumping to conclusions that I am not qualified to make. I will start looking into it following your advice.
U R Welcom! I hope it somehing simple...: Let me, and other readers, now how it wotks out. :-)
Now the battery is dead,(but the battery was in perfect shape, I had it checked afterward). I was told try to put it in 4-wheel drive low. That did not do anything. No indicator lights at all. As if that whole unit (4X4 Auto, 4X4 High, 4X4 Low)is dead. I read in my manual that the proper way is with the gear shift in N and foot on brake. Well, Bob came back from vacation and after having the car towed to him the battery was dead again. He jump started the truck and found the same problem I had with no power in any gear. The only code left in the memory was "low voltage". After the car had been running a while and Bob had pushed the 4x4 buttons repeatedly the transfer case moved out of "Neutral" and everything was fine! I was told that there is a key available to put the transfer case into neutral for towing, wheels on the road, but I did not buy one of those keys. The Transmission shop did not charge m,e for his diagnosis and said that this issue was a first for him. I would guess Bob has at least 30 years experience. The truck has been driving absolutely fine for the last few days, battery checks out as equal to new. I will be a little nervous for another month. Thanks for all your help.
