Is your check engine light on? There may be trouble codes that will help you pinpoint the problem in the vehicles diagnostic system. A dealer or shop will charge you anywhere from $50- $100 just to scan the system using an OBD2 compatible scanner (All vehicles 1995? on have the On Board Diagnostics II terminal to plug in the scanner. On Fords it is usually somewhere under the dash near the steering wheel). If you go to an AutoZone or O'Reilly's Auto Parts store, they sometimes will scan the vehicle for free and help you decipher what the codes are that comes out of the system. Has the transmission ever been serviced such as changing the fluid or cleaning of the transmission oil filter? If you have over 100k on the vehicle it may be a good idea to have the filter either cleaned and/or replaced. Have you checked the level of the transmission fluid? Vehicle must be warmed up and running, parked on a level surface to check. Does the fluid smell burnt if you smell it on the transmission dipstick? This may indicate old or bad fluid. Transmission fluid has special friction qualities to help the transmission shift correctly. Check the fluid and replace it if is bad. If you cannot do this yourself, an oil change place like Jiffy Lube has a machine that will exchange the old fluid for new for a fee. Hope this helps!
