Mechanically, the heat and A/C are two separate systems. The heater uses engine coolant to warm the cabin, whereas the A/C system uses refrigerant. But what the two systems often share is electronics. The HVAC system in your van is quite complex. Using input from various sensors, such as the A/C pressure sensor and engine coolant temperature sensor, the engine control module (ECM) controls the AC compressor clutch via a relay. Meanwhile, the blend doors, blower motors, etc. (both front and rear) are governed by the HVAC control module. The modules communicate with one another over the CAN data network. My guess is that your problem lies somewhere within this vast array of electronics. If there are diagnostic trouble codes stored (DTCs), which there should be, a professional technician will be able to retrieve them to help isolate the concern.
