What is your question?
Two weeks ago I went out to start my car and it had a loud ticking noise that it did have the day before. I took it to the Dodge dealer and told me that I had a bad lifter. They gave me an outlandish estimate and said that it could be more if they have to replace the camshaft. @ $130 an hour I can't afford to get it fixed as I have been out of work for four years. I need to find an honest mechanic who can first confirm that the problem is a lifter and second, can perform the work at a reasonable cost.

Your best chance to find an honest mechanic is by word of mouth. Start asking friends about who they deal with , look for ones that go to independent non chain-type shops on a consistent basis , not people who bounce around from shop to shop. And , just an opinion , I'm not familiar with dodge habits , but it is possible I suppose , if a faulty lifter is left alone long enough , it could cause premature cam lobe wear. Also , worn cam lobe may be the actual cause of noise , not lifter? Either case , you could NOT know , until tear-down , I believe. Good luck.
I agree with ziptie!.... These engines are also know for broken valve springs!!!..Very common! Just thought I would throw that into the mix! Is it running rough, misfiring all of a sudden? Check engine light on??..Be Damn sure this is checked out and confirmed 'yea or nay' before anything else is done! Just saying.
No. Engine runs same as before, just has the loud tick now that it did not have the previous day. I posted video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxDNB4aimNk&feature=youtu.be
Then it's not a valve spring!... There are more honest mechanics out there than most people think!!.. Some not so for sure but not as many as folks let on!!!!..... Find you a shop that's been in business for several years...ask around, as stated... You'll find a good repair shop!
I had the same problem as well as many others online. it is your pistons it either blew or is getting ready to blow .everytime it rained i would have the problem of my dodge durango not starting until it dried out. Dodge knew this was an issue they never built anything around the engine to protect it from rain water. So the water sits on the engine until it carodes it and you are stuck with out a car. Send your complaint in to dodge so we can get a recall because the said not enough people complained but thats a lie if u look online there are so many people with the same problem and dodge wont accept blaim. And i was told that even if i replace my engine there no promise i wont have the same problem because the 2004 dodge durango engine was made with defects that they got away with. I hope this helps
Hard to tell , but from the video (to me) it almost sounds more like an exhaust manifold leak. Does it get a little quieter after warmed up? Hard to tell watching a video .This is a 'pushrod' engine right?
Engine is a 5.7 hemi and no, dealer said it is not exhaust leak, but is a lifter. He wants to charge big $$$ to fix, hence my quest for an honest mechanic that can do this for less. Thanks
Hard to argue with someone that can actually see/hear the problem... first hand!... It's going to be big bucks, no matter who does the work!!... From the audio, I was leaning toward a rod bearing!! .. Get louder with more rpm?..That's mighty loud and instantaneous when it first starts for a lifter.... Almost hear two different noises, dull thud and a tapping... But then I've been told I can't hear s--t!... To many years of banging on em with a BFH!!!... That works every damn time!!!! If it don't fit don't force it... Just use a bigger hammer... Later!.......... ..........HEY WOMEN, WHERE MY BEATS AT.....?.... HUH....WHAT......oh.
Guess I need to upgrade my sound system! Harman/Kardon just ain't kickin' it anymore!..........and now I know who stole my damn hammer!!!....
I still keep one handy......just in case some-thing goes wrong! ... Haven't had to send one to the body shop lately!! Guess I ain't doing my job.... Saw a guy throw one right through the windshield once!!... Then he didn't have a job, there anyway!... I've been temped on many occasion to do the same!
Thanks for your reply, however it it were cam lobe wear wouldn't the noise have been a gradual progression? With my situation there was no noise the previous evening and a distinct noise the next morning. Thanks
