2001 dodge dakota, 200 000kms on it. havent had any problems until recently. rear diff is making an odd noise. everything still works just a little nervous about what is going on, why its making it? i have a 1000km trek to make in a few days and im scared what could happen if i dont fix it. i drained the oil and there was some filings in it. what can i do besides replacing the oil? i just need it to make it the 1000 then my hubby can fix it when im there.

it sounds like you might have a bearing going I would clean the filings out and refill with oil then see if the noise is any louder if not I would drive it the 1000 km and then have it looked at
I agree with gg, might want to check on exactly what type lube goes back in it. Some take a special lube!
if its a bearing noise you may have to get it replaced at a qualified repair shop
replace pinion bearing and have diff inspected. I got a rear diff assembly from the junkyard and replaced. Cheaper than having rebuilt
