When you took the battery cable off... Wonder where the alternator sent that maximum regulated, or even full field unregulated voltage to?.. It very well may be the alternator now, among other things!.. Have it tested... Good luck!

YOU ARE NOT WORKING ON A 1973 CHEVY.YOU MUST NOT UNHOOK ANY BATTERY CABLES WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING.YOU CAN NOT DO THE OLD TAKE THE CABLE OFF TRICK TO SEE IF CAR RUNS OR CUTS OFF ON THE COMPUTERIZED CARS WE HAVE NOW..YOU MOST LIKELY FRIED LOTS OF THINGS,INCLUDING THE COMPUTER.WHY DID YOU DO THAT?
