Whats wrong with my gear shift?

Just replaced a shift cable today. The plastic keeper on the end of the cable attached to the transmission shifter arm, broke. The cable slipped off the pivot arm and the shifter was useless. There was no replacement part to fix the original cable. Had to replace it with a new cable.

Agree with prof. "The gear shift feels like it isn't connected to anything." Then it probably isn't. Follow the shifter cable to the trans. arm and see if it is still attached and tight. Otherwise, something broke at the other end inside the car.

return for warranty issue
