We were told by a mechanic that we had a small leak "(probably haven't hit the ground yet") in the thermostat housing. We have been seeing small amounts of dark (like oil or transmission oil spots every so often where the passenger side of car is parked.

Would a leak from thermostat housing be a dark color. He said it would cost $100 to seal.

general motors used a coolant called dex cool,it is orange in color.look in your coolant reservoir under hood,remove cap while engine is cold and see if coolant is orange,and are the spots you see on ground orange?
if mechanic is talking about the water outlet,it is $12.99 at autozone and comes with gasket.carefull removing cap on reservoir,only remove when engine is cool,a must.DO NOT REMOVE CAP WHEN ENGINE IS HOT,IT WILL SCALD YOU.
**IF it's a coolant leak**..... The T-Stat is on drivers side!.... 3.8L has two plastic 90° (elbow) heater hose connectors on passenger side of engine that commonly leak... NAPA part # 66601942 is the upgrade 'aluminum' replacements..around $12.00 for both...just another possibility, IF coolant is leaking on passenger side.. In any event.... Mechanic has the advantage here...can 'see' the vehicle! .. You can always get another 'visual' inspection and price estimate!!
