on a 99 z3 is the speedometer controlled by the left rear speed sensor?

Sorry.... my speedometer quits working on an irregular basis. I spoke briefly with a BMW mechanic and he said, without looking at it, he thought that it was controlled by the LR speed sensor

Well i'm no "BMW" mechanic but i do not think an intermittent speedometer operation has anything to do with he ABS wheel speed sensor(s)... I could be wrong... however it does have a vehicle speed sensor that's more likely the problem and needs to be diagnosed to confirm!

thanx for the info.... i stopped by the local bmw dealership they're a $100 an hour, and caught one of their mechanics trying to get any info to tell my shop guy, He doesn't have the diagnostics for a beemer but said he'd take a look and aasked me to get any info

Then it shouldn't be a wheel speed sensor failure , since that would trigger the ABS light
