A few, What does your oil look like, has it been changed religiously, what kid of oil are you using, oil pressure, are valve solenoids good, restricted oil flow to vanos. Without testing, all are possibilities.
An occasional ticking or rattling noise from the camshaft hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) may occur during cold engine starts, due to frequent short - distance driving, or the noise may occur for an extended period of time even though the engine is at operating temperature. Improved parts were phased into production beginning on 10/1/2008 and fully implemented on November 31st 2008.
The oil has been changed every 5000 miles with castrol 10w60 (recommended oil by BMW.Car had inspection 2 at 66,000 miles along with valve adjustment.Car now has 80,000 miles.Noise started around 75,000 miles.
It really sounds like a restricted oil flow, when it's cold. Of course the oil becomes warmed and it will flow better. The Vanos seems to always have an issue, because of oil flow. The solenoids seem the cause part of this when it's cold. It would have to be tested further to correct the issue.
