Most people really shouldn't ever open the hood!! .. Start TESTING fuses and good luck with it!
I just don't see how that can happen! A battery can explode when the cables are hooked up backwards. Anyone standing near the battery when it explodes could be seriously injured. Battery explosions will cause burns, permanent disfiguration and blindness.you are very lucky! ever seen a 12 VOLT Battery that has exploded? it ain't pretty.the last 2003 Lexus i saw where the cables were hooked up backwards was a $2500.00 FIX!
True story from some years back.. One of my brothers owns a market across the street from the shop.. I was looking at this nice 67 Corvette sitting in the parking lot at the market... This guy comes out of the store, gets in the Vette and cranks the engine.. Starter would not disengage.. He jumps out and jerks the battery cable off the battery to stop the starter from spinning.. Now, he'd obviously done this before cause the cable clamp was loose enough to just pull it off the battery terminal .. Well 'this time' .. them *Hydrogen Gasses* had built up and the sparks from the cable being removed was all it needed to go BOOM! .. Blew part of the fiberglass fender off.. Threw BATTERY ACID all over him and yes, into his eyes! .. I saw the whole thing and knew what he had done when he grabbed his face!... I ran to the first aid cabinet and grabbed a bottle of neutralizing acid wash, ran over and had to make him open his eyes to wash them out.. Like you said .. It wasn't pretty but he was ok, with no 'permanent' damage to his eyes after going to the hospital.. That was his lucky day .. What 'IF' no acid wash had been 'quickly' available???? .. Forget about the damn car repairs!!!! .. People ain't got a clue OR just don't know any better! .. That's the reason I posted the answer to the question that you see .. Not to be a smart ass, it's just fact! .. I hope this may help someone that try's to jump start a vehicle that really should not be fooling with it to begin with! .. Over the years I've been working on vehicles, this is just one of many batteries I have seen EXPLODE from a simple SPARK .. â–ªï¸BE VERY CAREFUL PEOPLE!!â–ªï¸.. Jump starting a vehicle, especially if it is done BACKWARDS > (Reverse polarity) Same thing could happen to YOU! We are just seeing WAY TOO MANY posted questions of this type lately, I hope that all the damage that's being done, is to the 'vehicles' ONLY!
just glad you had the wash and saw what happened and took action or the guy probably would have lost both eyes!people don't think or like one told me one time,"it's only 12 volts, just like a flashlight battery, what can that do"? buddy,i raked his ass over hot coals! i was down at a store last summer, saw a guy i know with hood up on his sons car,and lawn mower sitting in front of the car.i stopped, asked him what was wrong,he had cables hooked up to car and mower.he said battery was bad in mower.i said try it,and it clicked, click, click! i said NO,the starter solenoid is bad.he said yeah, that's what i thought? well,he kept trying it and finally hit the right spot and started.he THEN,he unhooked the cables from the mower and threw them on the ground, still hooked to his sons car.Yeap they looked like SPARKLERS on the 4th of July! i chewed his ass out so bad he cut his lawn mower off and pushed it back home? don't know why. he got very lucky, nothing wrong with the car. i will not jump start anyone, any more with cables hooked to my vehicle like i use to!
EXCATLY!! .. I know people think we're being butt holes about this stuff but if they ever saw what can happen .. and eventually 'WILL' happen, they'd change their minds !
Well luckily nobody got hurt and the battery was still fine. I guess they didn't have it clamped well. Who knows. So I need to check all the fuses?
Yes, it is best to TEST all of the fuses you can find, inside the car and under hood, with a test light with the key on.. Owners manual will help find all fuses.
