I brought my car in after the check engine light came on. I've replaced the s belt, the battery, and the alternator. Also an oem recommend top end cleaner and cleaning procedure was done to remove carbon build up. I was told my car is misfiring on cylinder 3 (code p0303 detected. One mechanic told me the valve needed to be replaced which would cost more then the cars worth and another saying it's the coil pack. What are the differences between the two and what issues would be present for each

if it's a 4 cylinder,clear the code,swap coils with another cylinder,start the engine,CEL should come back on,see what the code is now. if it moved to a different cylinder,then you will know if it's the coil,COP. 6 cylinder only has one ignition coil per car. if it is a 6 cylinder,pull the spark plug wire from the plug on #3,set the plug wire close to a good solid place on the engine,start the engine,see any good blue spark coming from the plug wire?
I'm sorry but there is no way two different 'mechanics' could possibly be that mistaken about the culprit of a simple misfire .. That's just how it is! http://repairpal.com/repair-shops
As far as the ignition system goes, you can try to swap coils, and or spark plugs to see if the problem moves to another cylinder. As far as the valves goes, you can check compression, and perform a leak-down test on cylinder number 3.
I refuse to believe this vehicle has been checked by a 'mechanic' at all ... Even a novice can easily tell the difference between inadequate compression and no ignition spark! .... Just so it be known!!! I suppose it doesn't matter anyway since there has been NO response from the person(s) concerned.... They had nothing better to do at the time it was originally posted - I reckon ... It's likely just office chatter from around the water cooler or coffee pot ... > Where everybody is a mechanic! .. OR .. whatever they wish to be - depending upon the topic of the conversation at the time...
