Agreed - usually the operator can choose the desired function without actually looking at the steering wheel .. Which is probably a good thing while driving!
It shouldn’t take long ‘at all’ - for most people - to become familiar enough with the *steering wheel* controls that they don’t need to see them .. Furthermore it would be distracting to the vehicle operator to look at the controls each time they were used!
Thus part of the reasoning behind no illumination for the steering wheel controls.
