oil pressure is not stable

Have a MECHANIC check your actual oil pressure with a test gauge before 'any' other work is done!! Never rely on onboard instrumentation for accurate measurements!! Possible oil pressure switch/sending unit problem or gauge. Pressure test will confirm an oil pump problem, IF one exist on this 5.7 Chevy V/8.
You need to remove the oil pan to access the pump. Can you get the oil pan out?
What engine do you have? If it is the 3.8 V-6, the oil pump is behind the front harmonic balancer, and it is inside the timing chain cover. It can be changed without taking the engine out. There are special instructions on priming the pump.
I should have gave a little more info. It is a 5.7. The oil pressure has been checked with a gauge. At 1000 rpm, it flucuates between 15 to 40 psi. I was hoping to find some one who had tackled this job before. The engine has 232000 on it and does not use any oil between changes. Parts to do this run about 100.00. Plans are to replace the car for suv with more room. I think the engine will raise far enough to remove the pan with out taking tranny loose from engine but, not sure. That is why i was looking for some one who had done this.
Pump most likely ok! Sludge in oil pan intermittently blocking pickup screen! Google "flush oil pan". Then if that doesn't work, remove oil pan by jacking engine, may have to drop pump with pan!....That what you looking for??
thanks, will take a look.
Yeah!
