Accompanying noise is similar to a fire extinguisher and a kind of intermittent squeal. Truck has 100K this has not happened before today. A/C has been working fine.

REPLACE the A/C compressor CLUTCH relay and REPLACE the compressor pressure relief valve (that will require professional evac and recharge of system for best results. The smoke is from the compressor clutch relay staying stuck 'on' and no condenser fans operating , leading to the system becoming over-pressurized and discharging some refrigerant (belt squeal from compressor over-worked & smoke from R-134 blow-off)
Thanks for the response. It jibes with the local mechanic's opinion. I ended up showing to the mechanic a video I shot and when I ran the engine w/o the a/c on, there was no noise or discharge.
Check to make sure the A/C compressor CLUTCH is NOT engaged , unless the radiator/condenser fans are operating. THAT will be the proof.
